Exchange Specialty Coffee
Occupying an iconic corner in Adelaide’s East End, Exchange Specialty Coffee sits just ahead of the coffee curve.
Long, clean espressos and bright, fruity filters (Aeropress is the method of choice) are the venue’s defining offerings. Since 2013, Melbourne stalwart Market Lane Coffee has provided a seasonal house blend, and more recently, local Monday’s Coffee Co has joined the rotation.
Exchange’s menu skirts around clichés in favour of produce-driven dishes such the heirloom cauliflower, kale and pistachio salad with fresh herbs. Then there’s the signature Wallace sandwich with avocado, Barossa pancetta, chipotle mayo, roasted peppers and mojo verde – and its vego and vegan cousins, the Walloumi and the Wegan.
In 2016 the site expanded to improve service and increase capacity. Whenever more tables are added, they’re soon filled by the loyal and perpetually growing clientele. It’s a good problem to have.
The site was once part of the Adelaide Fruit and Produce Exchange – a sprawling four-acre market that traded from 1904 until 1988. Now repurposed and redeveloped, the area boasts a handful of cafes and niche retailers, with Exchange among the best of them.
