Hains and Co

4:00pm - 2:00am
23 Gilbert Place Adelaide 5000

When Marcus “The Admiral” Motteram moved back to Adelaide (after co-owning New Guernica and Chuckle Park in Melbourne), he found himself searching the laneways of Adelaide for something new. Enter Gilbert Place, where Motteram found the site that would become Hains & Co, his nautical-themed bar.

Tap beers change frequently but come in sizes named dingy, tanker and tall ship, while the bottled beers include Pirate Life, Smooth Beard and Lord Nelson Old Admiral. Cocktails include the requisite Dark ‘n Stormy (Stolen Gold rum, lime and ginger beer), a citrusy breakfast martini (scurvy be gone!) and house-mulled cider.

In true sea captain style, you can even get the bar staff to match a cigar to your drink. They’re restocked frequently but come from a range of sources, namely Cuba, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and may be enjoyed on the front deck.

There’s also a bar menu which includes spicy Nashville-style fried chicken, fries, salads, a cheeseburger and shrimp burger. But since day one the cult dish has been the housemade sausage rolls with shiraz and black pepper chutney. The recipe came from “Tuckshop Tiff”, who Motteram poached from his kids’ school tuckshop.

Comfort food, cigars and stiff drinks: clearly, Hains & Co is all about lifting spirits. And while many spirits are lifted to customers’ mouths, there is also a noticeable spring added to everybody’s sea step.
