One day, policeman David Nancarrow decided the grass was indeed greener elsewhere. He quit his job and went next door to renovate the old carport of a bank building with help from artist Cameron Lewcock. The result is Zest Cafe Gallery, a cosy space with art-covered walls.

Zest is known for its great mix of coffee, food, service and ambience. Breakfast options include a house blend of muesli or Hell’s Eggs – two eggs grilled in a pot with spicy salsa, topped with cheese and Zest’s own barbeque sauce. Lunch offers include soup of the day, chilli chicken wrap, beef casserole, and a Mediterranean platter.

This menu has barely changed since opening day. The guys can’t discontinue anything because it’s all so popular. They also still source all the cafe’s produce from the Central Market and beans from local roaster the Coffee Barun.

In 2014 this consistent approach paid off, leading to the creation of a sister store, Second Chapter. It’s a shop front cafe with a more display food style approach.
