Features
If one venue sums up Adelaide’s diverse personality, incorporating its past, present and future, it’s The Howling Owl. The coffee from D’Angelo boasts it’s ‘heaps good’ and apart from a completely South Australian beer and wine list, there are more than 80 gins to choose from, five of which come from Kangaroo Island.
By day, The Howling Owl operates as a cafe that leads directly into the adjoining gallery space and gift shop, Urban Cow Studio. The menu is made up of a range of ready-made sandwiches featuring ingredients such as Limestone Coast Wagyu, dukkah-spiced chicken breast and Black Forest ham with green tomato pickle.
By mid-afternoon the cafe crowd starts to transform as ceramics are replaced with highballs and sparkling water with Fever Tree tonic. Each gin is accompanied by a serving suggestion, such as organic lemonade and basil for Kangaroo Island’s Mulberry Gin, or a classic citrus zest and tonic for Tanqueray 10.
If gin’s not your tipple, the range of South Australian beer, wine and cider makes a sound alternative, and the selection of grazing boards will keep hunger at bay.
