José and Oswaldo Estrella are stars in the Adelaide Hills restaurant scene. After moving to Australia from Mexico and working for eight years in various hospitality roles, they set up shop in a cramped Mount Barker cafe.

Their second store, on Grenfell Street, is the more contemporary, industrial sister of its Hills-based sibling, but, thanks to the sleek wooden settings and colourful Mexican decorations, it manages to feel just as vibrant and welcoming, if not a little more spacious.

The Estrellas’ love for coffee is evident in their immaculate brewing and presentation, even in something as simple as a takeaway long black. Their chilli hot chocolates and chai lattes will put a fire in any belly.

What sets Sazón’s menu apart from other Mexican restaurants is an additional Italian influence. The line-up of generously topped round breads are an example. The chicken, basil pesto and guacamole round is a simple creation with bold flavour.

The bar’s neon sign, “y tu Sazón tambien”, invites everyone to come in and make the Grenfell Street store their home for the afternoon.
