No one does comfort food like Nanna. Secluded in the warren of the Central Market Plaza that joins the main precinct to Moonta Street, you’ll find cash-strapped students queuing behind grandmothers, all hungrily eyeing rows of hot, glistening Asian buns.
Something of a secret, Nanna Hot Bake – with its intriguing name and an imposing oven configuration reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix’s Marshall stack amplifier – continues to out-cook and outperform its franchised competitors.
A simple menu, segregated into sweet, savoury and spicy options, offers traditional favourites such as BBQ pork (doughy, gooey, meaty, sweet), lemon tuna (popping with chilli) and Nanna’s own hotdog. Sweets include a custard bun, red bean sweet bun, egg tart and more.
Despite the broad selection of buns (22 in total), Nanna’s is more a snack stop than a lunch spot – the offerings make an ideal one-handed treat while prowling for produce in the market proper. Or while pausing for a break, perched to people-watch from one of the few rickety aluminium settings nearby. Prices sit between $1.60 and $2.80 apiece, meaning you could almost try one of everything for less than forty bucks.
