Mister Pigeon is in the Gilles Street space which once housed Fawn. The 1870s corner store retains the cosy, neighbourhood feel of its predecessor, but it's undergone a personality overhaul. The records on the wall are choice cuts from owner Callum Dinnison's own collection and a book exchange enhances the community feel of the room. Dinnison stripped his house bare to furnish Mister Pigeon – even his nanna's lamp is here.
Toasties are the stars. Past highlights have included the Taking Pear of Business – roast pork with pear, a balsamic reduction, gorgonzola and rocket – and the vegan Chick Please!, made with avocado, hummus, tomato, cucumber, carrot, alfalfa and spinach. Some old favourites from Fawn have been carried over: Dawn Patrol coffee beans are still in the grinder, and the house-made sausage roll has stayed on the menu too. There's also a range of cakes made in-house or come courtesy of local baker Claire Patton.
Eco-consciousness is another focus. Bringing your own cup will score you 20 cents off your coffee order, as does returning a takeaway drinks tray. In fact, there's no single-use plastic to be seen.
