In a city filled with banh mi, Mamachau stands out. Sisters Bich and Linh Nguyen modelled the menu on their childhood. Packing their kids’ school lunches, the duo’s parents would try to westernise typical Vietnamese meals, making ham sandwiches with pickled carrot, for example.
Thus while the cafe offers the usual suspects – banh mi and cold rolls – its biggest drawcard is bao (pillowy Asian tacos), which the sisters were the first to introduce in Adelaide. The KFC Bao (fried chicken with Asian slaw and kimchi mayo) should be your priority.
Other fast lunch options include rice boxes, salads and laksa. For something different, add a Yeos Asian fruit drink (lychee, soy milk, chrysanthemum tea or sugar cane).
