East of Norman
East of Norman transitions seamlessly from cafe to late-night venue. By day, owner Sebastian Russell (formerly of Pure Espresso) pulls Five Senses espresso from behind a beautiful marble and concrete bar. The elegant space was fitted by interior designer Claire Kneebone, who’s also kitted out Press, 2KW and Udaberri.
When it comes to meals, Russell focuses less on fusion and more on the sure-fire fave dishes of multicultural Australia, bringing them together under one roof. Margherita pizza sits alongside chargrilled barramundi, and pad thai salad.
Drink options have a focus on local Italian varietals and a large selection of spirits, namely gin and whisky. The broad range means there’s a good mixture of local and imports.
Don’t be fooled by the neat interior – shorts and sandals are just as acceptable here as your Sunday best. In a time when eateries are constantly narrowing their focus, it’s refreshing to see a modern, accomplished take on the neighbourhood all-rounder.
