Cachemira
Days after the opening of Studio Spring on Magill Road in 2021, Stepney scored another arrival – next door – in the form of Cachemira.
Owners Isaac King and Nathan Nababan (who together run Belair cafe Lenox Ave) made over the pokey former Libertine by Louis site into a Mediterranean-inspired brunch spot and bar.
The pair were mindful of the space’s great character and haven’t altered it too much. A large mirror makes the dining area seem larger than its actual meterage, and natural light floods in from several angles. In the courtyard out back, vines and olive trees give a rustic, homey vibe – perfect for the summer months. A long oak dining table from King’s family’s country home completes the effect.
By day, there’s a simple menu of ready-made sandwiches, pastries and coffee by Toby’s Estate. Look for the open baguette with salt and pepper squid, cherry tomatoes, chilli and salsa verde; a chicken burger with manchego, Catalan sauce, smoked confit garlic aioli and patatas bravas; and the truffle mushroom ragu with poached eggs on sourdough. Croissants and other pastries are baked within walking – and smelling – distance at neighbouring croissanterie, Cannelle Pastries.
