The story of Bar 9 begins and ends with great coffee. After slow beginnings in a humble tin shed across the road, it has evolved into a staple of Adelaide’s brunch scene and now boasts a second location in the CBD.
Owner Ian Callahan is a former state champion barista and self-confessed coffee nerd. His talents are reflected in the skilled staff preparing the Five Senses coffee on his behalf. Bar 9 also does some of its own roasting on-site.
The local produce menu offers the full brunch range, from lighter dishes such as English muffins, fruit salad or quinoa porridge to big breakfasts, including chorizo baked beans and asparagus on toast. The truffled mushroom ragu is a highlight for regulars.
The space feels much like eating brunch at a mate’s house, fitted out with couches, eclectic art and a soundtrack that varies from Flume to Ray Charles.
As you’ll find in many coffee haunts, weekends can get pretty loud and crowded and may mean a wait for a table. However, staff members are always attentive and will never rush you through your meal. The real struggle lies in saying no to a third latte.
