Sugar
Features
An oldie but a goodie, Sugar is the kind of place you go at about the time Cinderella’s coach turned into a pumpkin.
Everything from cabaret to comedy has graced this plush-pink loft, especially around Fringe Festival when it transforms into a multi-disciplinary hub. But mostly, it enjoys status as one of the magnets in town for local and touring international DJs. If you’re after a mix of bass, house and techno until extremely late, it’s reliably found here every weekend.
Sound selectors spin tunes all night for the wild ones, and your more reserved friends can try their hand at one of the five pool tables. There’s also a fun and lengthy list of house cocktails, plus a varied enough range of local wines to cater for just about any taste.
If you’re lucky, owner Driller Jet Armstrong might make an appearance on the decks. Armstrong has weathered many a storm during his tenure, including a near-closure in 2015 and the worst of Adelaide’s pandemic restrictions. But his inimitable venue continues to endure as one of the city’s best (and sweetest) late-night institutions.
