Karrawatta is a family-owned winery with vineyards in Meadows, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, three of South Australia’s premier regions. Owned by Mark and Ali Gilbert, the brand’s cellar door is at its Sophie’s Hill site (named after Mark’s daughter), located 45 minutes outside Adelaide city at the intersection of the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale.
With sloping vines, terraced lawns, barbeques and firepits, the idyllic setting encourages guests to stay and savour a glass or two over a sunny afternoon. Inside is a modern and spacious tasting area with fireplaces and comfortable seating, and a private dining room upstairs.
Karrawatta is also where you can choose your own adventure. Order wines by the glass or bottle with some grazing fare, or settle in for one of five tasting experiences. Tastings start at $15 for a simple two-wine package. Or, if you’ve got 90 minutes and $175 to spend, you can get cheese and charcuterie, a private vineyard tour and tastings of the premium and ultra-premium ranges.
