5 O’Clock Somewhere
Steve Grimley owned this office building for a few years and called it home on weekends when he and his family ventured away from the vines. Now it's home to a boutique bottle shop and cellar door, with a friendly corner-store mentality.
The fit-out took almost eight months. No shopfitter – just Grimley and his team of enthusiastic young winemakers from his business, McLaren Vale Winemakers.
The walls are clad in recycled timber boxes made by Kindling Furniture and brushed with white typography. Fleurieu Peninsula wines tower from floor to ceiling, giving you the opportunity to dabble in blends by several winemakers, including 5OS’s “home brand”. There’s also the option of Villere coffee, roasted on-site in McLaren Vale.
Staff will crack open bottles so you can taste before you buy. These vintners have a wealth of knowledge and know their wines inside out – as does Grimley, who has been in the industry for years.
On Sundays you'll find him, glass in hand, sharing bottles with locals. Without doubt, 5OS is the best way to explore the McLaren Vale wine scene without actually leaving the city.
