It’s not every day you get to learn the tricks of an artist’s trade in their studio. That’s what new series It’s All In The Making and Meet Your Maker give small groups of creative locals the chance to do.
South Australian organisation Guildhouse and online platform Well Made are behind the events. They’re all about connecting creative spaces, practitioners and their audiences.
The workshop series starts on July 23 with Carving It Up With Caren Elliss, a furniture designer who crafted the fit-outs for Mister Sunshine’s and Nook Nosh Wine Bar.
Ceramic Sculptures with Alison Smiles is also locked in for December 3 at 6 Hands Studio. Participants will learn how to create their own pieces. “Our vision is for creative professionals to have sustainable careers and to be recognised and valued by our community,” says Guildhouse executive director Rae O’Connell. “Workshops provide an opportunity for skill and technique development."
The Meet Your Maker studio visits and artist talks begin on August 21 with Laced Dreams With Cheryl Bridgart. For two hours, 25 participants will join the artist in her Beltana House Gallery studio where she’ll demonstrate freehand embroidery techniques (a bit like drawing with a sewing machine).
On October 20, 12 people will hit Zu Design to fossick through 20 years of archives with jewellery maker Jane Bowden.
“There’s a sense of magic about seeing something made by hand,” says coordinator Merri Cranswick. “To watch and learn how the best practitioners in their fields create something is invaluable.”
Prices vary and spaces are limited.
