You don’t have to look too far to find Emma Sadie Thomson’s handiwork.
The Adelaide plant stylist has lent her green thumb to the interiors of your favourite venues: Bread and Bone, Osteria Oggi, Crack, Electra House, La Moka, Stone’s Throw and more. Most recently, she’s been tasked with invigorating Simon Kardachi’s new, two-pronged venture at Henley Beach.
Thomson can also be found selling her potted plants at Ensemble, a space she shares with an ever-expanding group of local makers (Good Studios, Weft, BB Shoemaker and more).
She’s now sharing all the knowledge she’s accumulated in a very handy zine, titled A–Z Indoor Plants. It’s a collaboration with Adelaide turned Byron Bay illustrator Sabrina Sterk.
As the name suggests, the mag takes you through 26 indoor plants, from angel wing begonia to zebra cactus. There’s information on how to care for your fiddle leaf fig, ornamental pepper plant and lollypop plant. It’s even got “X” covered – xanadu philodendron, if you’re wondering.
Thomson imparts specific care tips for each variety, including “the right plants for indoors, how to propagate, [and best growing] conditions,” she says. It’s an invaluable resource for those of us who’ve made a zealous indoor plant purchase only to cause its untimely death.
Thomson and Sterk will launch the zine on Thursday December 14 at Ensemble. There’ll be zines and tote bags for sale, plus posters with Sterk’s hand-drawn illustrations (“like the A–Z poster you had [on your wall] when you were little,” says Thomson).
There will also be refreshments from Mojo Kombucha and Commune of Buttons; plus sourdough and ancient-grain loaves from Small World Bakery.
