Online shopping is a modern Christmas miracle, but nothing can match the joy of meandering between market stalls and discovering that perfect gift. This year, browse beyond the browser and explore some of Adelaide’s best Christmas markets.
Carclew’s Dusk Arts Market
Carclew’s manicured grounds are a beautiful backdrop for big events, weddings and sprawling markets. Their annual Dusk Arts Market is an opportunity to shop bespoke gifts and one-off pieces from emerging and established artists from all around South Australia. Expect clothing, jewellery, zines, cards, ceramics and more; plus work from local visual artists and illustrators – all scored by a program of live music and catered by an assembly of food trucks. The event is also the launchpad for Carclew’s Reconciliation Action Plan. Be there as the organisation unveils its reconciliation garden with commissioned sculptural artwork by Indigenous artist Anna Dowling.
Dusk Arts Market is on Thursday December 7 from 5.30pm to 9.30pm at Carclew.
Meet the Maker: A Celebration of Local Art, Gin and Craft Beer
Meet the Maker is part market and part party, so come ready to celebrate. Join local artists at Urban Cow for workshops and demonstrations in glassblowing, watercolours and jewellery design, then head next door for gin tasting at Howling Owl with craft labels Never Never and Red Hen. Beer drinkers will be appeased with tastings from world-class brewery Prancing Pony. There’ll be plenty of gifts – but there’s also an opportunity to give back. Urban Cow is running a toy drive for the Welcome Centre and donations will be accepted until December 9. Appreciated donations are new (not pre-loved) soft toys, educational toys, board games and sporting equipment.
Meet the Maker: A Celebration of Local Art, Gin and Craft Beer is on Friday December 8 from 3pm to midnight at Howling Owl and Urban Cow.
ACE Open Summer Party
Newly merged art gallery ACE Open will bring together some of the city’s best creators for a pre-Christmas celebration – featuring a raffle, drag show and mini golf. Pick up locally made fashion, ceramics, textiles and art from Haneen Martin; Ensemble (Good Studios, BB Shoemaker, Weft and EST); Clay by Khoa; Noun Movement Books; Nadika; Olivia Kathigitis; Karlien van Rooyen and more. Certified organic Antipodes Gin will be slinging cocktails. Other highlights include a kitsch, interactive minigolf installation by artists Dominique Keeley, Henry Jock Walker and Lauren Albineri. The Kasey Chambers Experience will also be present, performing subversive drag interpretations of Kasey Chambers biggest hits.
ACE Open Summer Party is on Saturday December 9 from 3pm to 7pm inside ACE Open and in the Lion Arts Centre courtyard.
Etsy is a gifting goldmine – online. This year, Etsy Adelaide brings its offering to the people IRL, with two Christmas markets in Norwood and Marion. Run by a collective of Etsy sellers, these markets are an opportunity to browse locally made homewares, jewellery, fashion, toys and more; plus quality vintage items. Add to cart. They’ve roped in food vendors and musicians to serve and play live, and the Marion event includes a program of ‘learn a craft’ skills workshops for adults and children.
Twilight Etsy Christmas Market is on Saturday December 9 from 4pm to 9pm at the corner of Portrush Road and The Parade, Norwood.
Marion Christmas Bazaar is on Saturday December 16 from 5pm to 9pm at Marion Cultural Centre.
Christmas Market at the Market Shed
December 10 marks 2017’s final Sunday market at The Market Shed on Holland – so they’re making it a big one. In addition to the regular roster of food and produce stalls, they’ve invited a heap of local makers, growers and musicians to join them for the day. There’ll also be face painting for the kids and fresh drops from Massey Wines for the grown ups.
Christmas Market at the Market Shed is on Sunday December 10 from 9am to 3pm at The Market Shed on Holland.
Makers and Shakers Market
Woodville’s Makers and Shakers Market is a carefully curated event uniting those who care where goods come from, how they’re made and what they’re made of. On December 16, Woodville Town Hall will be packed with punters perusing stalls from a host of local artists and makers including Kitty Came Home, Nanna Woo, Sonya Moyle, Wajacreations and many more. There will be food and coffee from Abbots and Kinney, Very Vegan, locapops and others, with a focus on delicious vegetarian and vegan options.
Makers and Shakers Market is on Saturday December 16 from 10am to 3pm at Woodville Town Hall. Entry is $2 with children under 12 free.
For those longing for a European-style white Christmas, Hahndorf’s Christkindlmarkt is about as close as you’ll get in Adelaide. Shoot up the freeway and pull over when you see the twinkly lights. For three nights in December, shops and cafes along the main street will stay open late into the night. They’ll be joined by more than 50 stallholders and live entertainers, plus Carols by Candlelight in the park at 9.15pm every night.
Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt is on Friday December 15 from 5pm to 10pm, and Saturday December 16 and Sunday December 17 from 4pm to 10pm at Hahndorf.
Christmas Gift Market at Plant 4
Bowden’s Plant 4 is one of our favourite market venues. Conveniently timed a week before the big day, it’s the perfect (last) chance to hunt down those few remaining gifts or pick up something for yourself. The fully undercover, two-storey space will be packed with bakers and makers, growers, sewers and pottery throwers. The bar will be serving craft beer, wine, cider and cocktails, with live music and a kids’ zone to distract the little ones.
Christmas Gift Market is on Sunday December 17 from 10am to 4pm at Plant 4 Bowden.
