he team that gave us all the candle-lit doily-chic of Grandma’s Bar is at it again, this time inspired by an Irish drinking song.
Warren Burns, James Bradey, Kim McDiarmid and bar manager Andres Walters are busily putting the finishing touches on the new space, which they’ve given the moniker The Wild Rover, in honour of the song:
“I've been a wild rover for many a year
And I spent all my money on whiskey and beer,
And now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more.”
“It’s about a guy who spent all his money on whisky and beer, which suited us just fine,” says manager Kim McDiarmid. “He went away, came back and asked the bar woman for credit. She wouldn’t give it to him.”
Tucked into a space that was vacant for around six years in Surry Hills, the boys describe the bar as “like an Irish bar crossed with NYC chic”. Expect steel mugs for beer and cocktails and a lot of mug-swilling, swashbuckling fun.
The Wild Rover is expected to open in around three weeks – we’ll let you know when an opening date is finalised. We can assume that they won’t be offering credit.
The Wild Rover is opening soon in Surry Hills.
