Away from hustle and bustle of King Street lies cult culinary venue Oscillate Wildly. Pegging itself as a ‘small neighbourhood restaurant’, the relaxed bistro serves up an ever-changing seasonal degustation of eight inventive courses for $100 ($55 for wine degustation).

On the menu, dishes are described only by their key ingredients – such as ‘Kingfish, cucumber, soy’ – so your meal is always something of a mystery before it arrives from the kitchen of head chef Karl Firla (ex Est and Marque). The waiter will then explain the ins and outs of each ingredient and how to consume it.

The tiny 28-seater space is stylish yet unpretentious, with black and white tiled flooring, long panels of abstract art on the walls and warm lighting. An eclectic array of tunes can be heard in the background.

A local favourite in Newtown since 2003, you’ll still be hard pressed to get a table, even with a few weeks notice.
