Housed in what was previously both a Coles and an About Life store at the top end of Rozelle, and named after Citizen Kane’s fondest childhood memory (his sled), Rosebud was a sight for sore eyes when it opened up back in 2009 as one of the larger spaces in the neighbourhood. A few years on it’s a local staple (especially with mums who find room for their prams and tots here), but it’s more than the comfortable size that keeps regulars coming back.
If you’re looking for an all day breakfast, or an excellent espresso with your lunch, then you’re in luck, because that’s what Rosebud does best.
There’s a chalkboard wall offering daily specials and a menu that reflects the seasons, but might include cinnamon pancakes, zucchini, leek and Persian feta frittata, or a wagyu beef burger complete with bacon. But there’s also a renewed support for local produce that flavours the menu.
Blonde wood tables offer communal or intimate options in the open-plan space, and looped naked light bulbs swing overhead. The kitchen is on show, which makes for a great atmosphere when the pans are flashing, while the counter-corner glass display holds a rotating display of muffins and cakes.
They’re passionate about good coffee here too, having worked with Single Origin Roasters (Surry Hills) to find a perfect blend for the cafe. Simply called Rosebud, it includes beans from Panama, Mexico and India.
And in case you needed any extra enticement, the Rozelle brick-a-brac market is right over the road on the weekends.
