Wander off Ourimbah Road into a paved lane to discover the hum of The Penny Royal cafe. Perhaps some of the best coffee this side of the bridge, it’s become a fixture in the Mosman brunch scene, despite the fact it’s not much more than a hole in the wall.
As such, it’s not easy to score a table at peak times. These are some cramped quarters, but the staff are efficient and friendly as you wait. Sure, queues can deter, but be patient – the coffee is worth it and the sandwiches, also a favourite, are just as good eaten in a park nearby.
If you do nab a table, this place is cosy as you sip a latte and watch the kitchen prepare dishes of avocado and tomato bruschetta or pear and ginger jam and ricotta on sourdough.
Like the space, the menu is limited, but all in all The Penny Royal is a sweet ingredient amid the Mosman strip.
