Kawa is the kind of cafe that feels like an extension of your living room. Its white walls and mismatched furniture make for a relaxed atmosphere; the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon with friends pouring over a pot of delicious spiced tea or Single Origin coffee and tasty organic food.

It’s New Zealand owned (note the slightly abstracted silver fern on the sign outside) and staffed by Surry Hills locals who often blend in with the clientele. Open for breakfast, lunch and everything in between, the menu features a range of teas, coffees, juices, smoothies and frappes alongside organic salads, sandwiches and your standard breakfast dishes (egg, muesli and toast). Portions are generous and the sweets and snacks are excellent. Our favourites are a chewy white chocolate oat cookie to savour after the famed chicken meatball sandwich.

There can be a short wait for a table on weekends but that’s often because no one is leaving this place in a rush.
