Laduree Brings French Macarons to Sydney

By Jane de Graaff,

The high priests of macarons open Laduree in the CBD.

W

e’ve been waiting for months with baited breath for the opening of the Sydney arm of the French macaron and tea-house empire Laduree. And now, finally, it has arrived at Westfield in the CBD- unchaining its velvet ropes on Tuesday lunchtime to a quietly waiting queue of macaron devotees.

It might only be a little island of calm that has set up shop in the foyer area of Westfield CBD’s Level 3, but with plush salon seating, powdery pastel colours and little pyramids of macaron towers, it fits right into the designer boutiques that it is nestled between. Don’t let the kiosk style arrangement put you off, behind the hedges sipping Laduree tea and ordering macaron flavours that include blackcurrant violet, orange blossom, iced mint, and the iconic rose petal, you’re transported to the tea houses of Paris.

The front glass counter is for perfectly packaged boxes of take-away, and includes a fine selection of nougats, chocolates, preserves and even Laduree candles. The packaging alone is a thing of beauty.

Considering the collaborations that have taken place between Laduree and designers that include John Galliano, Christian LaCroix and Christian Louboutin, it’s fitting that surrounding stores include Versace and (of course) Louboutin.

It might have started as a bakery in 1862, but there’s nothing surer than today the macaron has truly come into it’s own.
