Food & Drink
By Celina Siriyos,
7th January 2013

Merivale has teamed up with the Sydney Opera House to present two pop-ups during January – one touting tacos from Dan Hong at El Loco and the other offering a new and elegant drinking experience.

El Loco is camping out at some new digs over summer. As part of the Summer at the House program, the Surry Hills cantina is plying its cheap and cheerful fare at the Western Boardwalk of the Opera House until January 28.

El Loco at the House offers an all-too-irresistible $6 to $10 menu, including breakfast tacos, hot dogs and the infamous and ever-changing secret taco. Drinks stay true to the El Loco vibe, with their signature slushies sporting icy iterations of the margarita, plus some banana and coconut combinations.

If you’re after a stylish soiree rather than a fiesta, a Champagne and cocktail bar dubbed The Cove has also popped up. Styled after The Great Gatsby and offering a touch of elegance at the base of the famous sails, cocktails are themed according to current productions and plays.

It’s a good shake-up to the food and drink offerings at one of Sydney’s most renowned spots, and the long daylight hours make it even more impossible to tear yourself away from the vista. It’s a fleeting venture, so make sure you don’t miss your chance – opera tickets optional.
