Musical Alaska: 100 years of John Cage

Sun 19th August
Alaska Projects

Undeniably one of the most influential characters in 20th century music and art, John Cage once said, “I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.”

But nearly 100 years to the day that Cage was born, Sydney zine World’s Only is set to present a tribute to the past ideas of the venerable American composer. From his infamous 4”33’ of silence, to the use of chance procedures and Eastern mythology in composition, Cage continually provoked and challenged audiences, often with tongue firmly in cheek.

The free afternoon concert will be a celebration of the music, art and philosophy of Cage’s 80 year career, performed by young and emerging Sydney musicians including World’s Only editor and Broadsheet contributor Megan Clune, emerging conductor Hoshimi Sakai, musician and director of Serial Space Tom Smith, ABC Young Performer Award finalist Som Howie and many more.
