Teaming up with the 18th Biennale of Sydney, cultishly followed Melbourne art and design store Third Drawer Down will bring a selection of their international wares to Cockatoo Island.

M

elbourne’s Third Drawer Down will be teaming up with the 18th Biennale of Sydney – Australia’s largest international contemporary visual art event – to present a pop-up exhibition in the form of the Biennale Art Shop on the World Heritage-listed Cockatoo Island site.

Framing itself as a Museum of Art Souvenir Store, Third Drawer Down is Australia’s only trading museum. Founded by Abi Crompton, Third Drawer Down is known for its focus on quirky products by talented designers and brands including Crayon Rocks, Zoomart, An Art Guide to Anywhere and limited edition textiles by legendary Japanese artist Yoyai Kusama and Mike Mills.

The art shop will be open every day from Wednesday June 27 until Sunday September 16 and is located adjacent to the Biennale Free Ferry Warf on Cockatoo Island. In keeping with their strong focus on questioning mainstream conditions under which art is purchased and sold, Third Drawer Down will ensure the shop features a plethora of hand-picked treasures, including products made by them for other museums around the world and editions by some of this year’s Biennale artists.

The Biennale, which runs for 12 weeks, will include a vast array of exhibitions, talks by artists, guided tours, forums and family days.

An event like this is well worth the trip. Not only do you see the beautiful World Heritage-listed Cockatoo Island, but you might just nab yourself a stunning, hand-picked product from Third Drawer Down.

The Third Drawer Down Biennale Art Shop runs from Wednesday June 27 to Sunday September 16 at Cockatoo Island.
