After flirting with a few after-hours events in the last few years, the Museum of Contemporary Art is finally settling down with a fleeting kind of fixture.

Rather than set up a bar proper, ARTBAR is an ‘ephemeral’ bar event held on the last Friday of every month and it offers a different sort of drink-in-your-hand relief after the working week. A guest artist will curate each evening, deciding everything from the music, performance, multimedia and overall design. It makes for a unique and immersive experience and it also means no two ARTBARS will ever be quite the same, which might make this a recurring date in your calendar.

Sydney-based photographer and video artist Justene Williams is at the helm of the inaugural evening, with DJs Charlie Chux (Abercrombie), Perfect Snatch (Gay Bash, Shameless), Touch Sensitive (Van She) and Tyson Koh (Loose Joint FB & Clambake) providing the tunes.

This first round of ARTBAR happens to coincide with the opening of the Vivid Festival so you’ll have the bonus of being able to watch the light installations across the quay.

MCA’s ARTBAR will take place the last Friday of each month beginning this week, Friday May 25, 7pm–11pm, at 140 George Street, The Rocks. Tickets $20/$15 MCA Members and Concessions, Over 18s only. Purchase tickets here.
