When you step into Smallspaces, you begin to understand why they say that there’s grace in small things. The Redfern design shop champions an interpretation of small space living that combines a sense of the poetic with a minimalist cool.

Smallspaces is the passion project of Sarah O’Neill, who traded in a fashion and design career (including stints at Colette Dinnigan and Koskela) to open a store that spoke to her appetite for small-scale living. O’Neill might just be on to something. The whitewashed space offers an artful edit of furniture, homewares and art, with highlights including vintage Ercol chairs, custom-made daybeds, pieces by celebrated Japanese furniture-makers Maruni and inventive answers to storage dramas by Danish brand Muuto.

Neon colour bursts by Melbourne artist Rowena Martinich and Matt Palmer’s left-field landscapes perfectly summate O’Neill’s playful approach to curation.

The focus at Smallspaces is on smart, multifunctional design – not a flat-pack in sight. It’s the perfect cure for IKEA-induced bleakness.
