Stranded at the drive-in, branded a fool. What will they say Monday at school? This weekend, enjoy the cinema experience without leaving the comfort of your car, just like Danny and Sandy.
This spring, a dedicated movement led by nostalgic cinephiles aptly named Revive the Drive-In is bringing the joys of the cinematic experience to an automobile near you. Where once upon a time there were over 60 drive-in cinemas scattered across Victoria, today only three remain – Village Drive-In Coburg, Lunar Drive-In Dandenong and Dromana 3 Drive-In, located on the Nepean Highway.
There’s a lot to love about a Saturday night at the drive-in, not least of all the fact that you can wear your jim-jams and no one needs to know about it.
With the option of boycotting the candy bar in favour of BYO snacks and ticket prices as low as $28 for a full carload, the nostalgia factor isn’t the only thing about the experience that remains stuck in the 1950s.
Better yet, you won’t have to worry about the risk of sitting behind an extremely tall or obnoxiously loud patron who is likely to interrupt the film with the shrill ring of their iPhone – but by all means, keep yours on if you wish. All that’s left to focus on is enjoying the movie and recreating the drive-in panel van scene from Puberty Blues, away from prying eyes. They weren’t disapprovingly nicknamed ‘passion pits’ for nothing.
Both Australia’s largest and oldest drive in, Lunar was reopened in 2002 after an almost two-decade hiatus and today boasts an “award winning chef” at the adjacent diner, who serves up pre or post-movie burgers.
