The name Some Velvet Morning is taken from the famous 1967 Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood duet where Lee dreams of "some velvet morning when I'm straight" and it seems an apt name.
Owners John Guscott and Sammy Lynch hail from mixed backgrounds (Guscott is a musician whose last job was composing for video games, while Lynch is a former wine rep) and have taken the hospitality bull by the horns and are doing a fine job with it.
As a musician himself, Guscott wanted to have a special focus on music. While the bar is only licensed to have acoustic music, the quality is excellent. The back room, which feels strangely like a super-hip nanna's living room, has a small fold out stage, an upgraded PA and an analogue tape machine all set up for recording shows taking place downstairs.
But the action out the back would be nothing if not complimented by excellence at the bar. Guscott and Lynch wanted to source as locally as possible. There’s Supreme’s house blend on the coffee machine, while Mountain Goat, Two Brothers and Old Salt flows through the beer taps. Jonesy's take care of the milk, Green Eggs provide the googlies and Largo supply the toast. Despite the kitchen being the end of the bar, the food here punches well above its weight. A two-page menu is packed with delicious offerings such as Spanish-style baked eggs with slow cooked chorizo, tomato and chipotle ragu.
But even without all these great things, the key to Some Velvet Morning's success is that it's simply a great place to hang out. Whether you're stumbling in after a big night for a Bloody Mary and a plate of eggs or sitting down to listen to some of Melbourne's finest crooners over a single malt, Some Velvet Morning is the kind of place where you'll find yourself so at home you might just forget to leave.
