Mother’s Milk sits cosy and dark on the Windsor end of Chapel Street. It is unmistakeably a bar. The black and orange signage outside sets the tone for most of the layout, starting in a main room adorned with a beaten copper fireplace and black leather couches. Two orange chandeliers flicker above the black tiled bar, and shapes are cut out of the black plastic that covers the cylindrical orange lamps, evoking a lava lamp effect. Down a short corridor is a small red room, made potentially private by red velvet curtains. This back room’s privacy diminishes on Friday and Saturday nights, however, when a back door is opened to reveal a staircase reaching a semi-open first floor deck. There is another bar up here, with Beck’s on tap.

An interesting cocktail list combines classics with a twist, like a Canadian Julep, with several summer-themed drinks such as a Frosty Fruit (evoking the icy pole) or a Sweet Basil Crush. Asahi and Pure Blonde are on tap, and there is a competent wine list including two champagnes. Plain or salt and vinegar Kettle Chips complete the available bar food, although pizza from adjoining Papalino’s can be ordered and eaten, on one of the snug couches if desired.
