This one’s for the scientifically curious, and those au fait with navigating laneways of Melbourne to find the bar of choice. The Croft Institute spans three floors, each with a unique décor theme. Walk in from the street to find yourself in a science lab (but one that serves nice, if slightly overpriced, drinks). Peruse the beakers and Bunsen burners as you sip your ale, boutique wine or speciality cocktail (including their mysterious signature, The Experiment, which is exactly that, and changes monthly), then take the stairs to the top floor and sit on the bleachers of a ‘gymnasium’ (serving something a bit stronger than Powerade and oranges) or dance on the ‘court’ to the live DJs on a Friday or Saturday night.
The crowd can be very varied, and almost ill fitting. But if you want to try one of Melbourne’s peculiar laneway bars, give it a go.
