ood Beer Week is something of an indicator as to the momentum of the boutique brewery industry in Victoria. In its second year, the event doubled in size and spread its reach throughout regional Victoria.
Encompassing a showcase event at the Royal Exhibition Building with the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular (GABS), along with high-end restaurants, cocktail bars, pubs and breweries opening their doors to beer enthusiasts, this nonstop eight-day beer love in is action packed to say the least. Here’s our pick of the events:
Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular
GABS kicks off on Friday with 60 beers brewed especially for the event, many never before released and most never to be repeated. Our best suggestion is to come armed with a highlights list. You can download the tasting booklet and save yourself those anxious decisions while lining up with your wooden tasting paddle. Settle into the atmosphere in the giant beer hall and taste your way through the dark, light and decidedly different line up, along with hundreds of other beer geeks.
Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton
Birreria Deluxe helps to celebrate the burgeoning Italian brewing scene. Having undergone a recent explosion in microbrewing (not unlike our home-grown scene), the Italians are presenting a host of newly available beers in conjunction with artisanal Italian produce. Beer Deluxe at Fed Square will become a homage to NYC’s restaurant and food store Eataly to welcome these new brews to our shores. Birra del Borgo, Brewfist and more will be available for tasting, effectively shifting your perception of Italy’s place in the brewing spectrum.
Beer Deluxe, Federation Square
Beer & Cider Sorbet Masterclass
Putting some interactivity and culinary reinterpretation into the mix, the Beer & Cider Sorbet Masterclass at St Peter's is a definite highlight. Beer diva Kirrily Waldhorn will take you on an educational journey through beer and cider, while Ricketts Point will be on hand to delve into transforming your favoured fermented beverages into semi-solidified goodness.
St Peter’s, 6 Melbourne Place, Melbourne
Good Beer Scavenger Hunt
For those that require some sort of hard work before indulging in beer as a well-earned reward (such is the Australian way), you can compete with a team in the Good Beer Scavenger Hunt. Sign up at The Fox in Collingwood, then take your team on a journey through the area using a combination of trickery, iPhone access and good ol’ radio to complete beer-themed challenges. Make it back to The Fox to catch PBS DJs spinning tunes and a fresh release brew from the local Cavalier crew.
The Fox, 351 Wellington Street, Collingwood
There a host more events happening at venues and breweries both in town and regionally. Check the website for more details and be sure to check for ticket availability – many events have been highly popular.
