New Managment at the Vic Hotel

Brunswick’s Victoria Hotel is slowly gaining a fresh lease of life with a new owner, great music and hot dogs.

By Hilary McNevin, 21st January 2011

T
he pub culture in Brunswick just got a little more interesting with long-time pub manager and hospitality professional Reggie Campbell taking over The Victoria Hotel just last week. The Victoria Street pub has had a slightly chequered history, with ownership changes every couple of years causing it to suffer from a bit of an identity crisis. But Campbell has plans for the place.

“I want to bring it back to a local pub,” explains the former venue manager at The Tote for the five years before it closed controversially in January 2010. It will be a step-by-step process but he plans to open a band room, redevelop the beer garden and set up a kitchen in a couple of months.

For now, he’s keeping it simple, opening up the beer garden by removing a roof that sat over it, setting up an outside bar and serving hot dogs and simple bar snacks. With six beers on tap, a “simple wine list” and Campbell’s experience in all things pub, this could well be a local that not just locals enjoying going to.
