Cumulus Rises Up

W

ith Flinders Lane becoming one of the city’s most sought-after strips for new dining and drinking spots, surrounding ground floors, narrow laneways and underground spaces are being utilised in increasingly creative ways just for the opportunity to be a part of the burgeoning scene.

With street-level spaces heaving at alarming capacity, chef Andrew McConnell, architect Pascale Gomes-McNabb and business partner Jayden Ong along with the Cumulus Inc. team of alchemists, have thought vertical with their new wine bar venture, aptly named Cumulus Up.

With no signage, Cumulus Up is a calming city loft purveying contemporary wine culture at its finest, approachable food and modern design with a rustic, farmhouse twist. After you ascend the stairs above the adjacent gallery space, you’ll find yourself immersed into the confines of the sights and sounds that are both industrial cool and signature Cumulus calm. The bottles are plenty, but the list is simple.

Aptly termed as a wine bar, Cumulus Up is a global trip into viticulture with a well-edited wine list that tours the globe from France and Italy to Spain and our sunburnt shores.

But no McConnell venture would be complete without his delicate food stamp. While the wine maintains focus, no bubbles or white would dare be lost at sea without some creamy Clair de Lune oysters. But if the inclination to get adventurous should bite, try the duck waffle with foie gras and prune or the red-loving dry aged 800-gram rib eye to share for $90.

The fit-out of the venue has made something of a storage space into an elegant, first floor, locavore haven complete with blown glass pendant lamps, marble tables and sharp wall mirrors. With exposed bricksand steel fixtures, it’s a place that’s both warm and cool in the same breath. Whether day or night, Cumulus Up is a lofty wine bar for the curious drinker and designer alike.
