esterday we served up the final drink at The Broadsheet Bar on Flinders Lane. For the past twenty days we've really enjoyed being a part of The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and working with Schweppes, but the festival has come to an end, and so we’ve put down our shakers, stirrers and high balls.
Der Raum, the mad scientists of the Melbourne cocktail scene – known for incorporating laboratory techniques to the creation of their drinks – took the helm last night with their potion-like concoctions. For the final night at the bar the Der Raum team brought cocktails like The Berry & The Bee, an almost herbal mix of distilled lemon myrtle, wild blackberries and wild fennel-infused honey, topped with fresh lemon and mint. They also served up a deconstructed Pina Colada.
With different cocktails every night and a range of experimental and classic mixes – including juleps, mules, blazers, daiquiris, coolers and martinis – last night rounded off our list of boozy connoisseurs, which also included The Everleigh, Seamstress, Bar Americano, EDV Melbourne, Bar Ampere, Black Pearl and The Beaufort.
The incredible reaction we’ve seen has reiterated just how great an opportunity this has been to bring together the best of the city’s bars and bartenders under one roof. Melbourne has one of the highest quality bar cultures in the world and these are the guys that maintain that level of standard and continue to push the industry forward.
Along with the cocktails, we also served up a list of local wines, expertly chosen by wine purveyors Blackhearts & Sparrows, and a rotating selection craft brews. Caterers Bright Young Things helped out with the perfect accompaniment to any drink, a plate of cheese and meat. All the while for, we’ve been sitting pretty on Thonet chairs as bartenders poured our tipples, kitted out from head to toe in Vanishing Elephant.
It has been a great pleasure serving up drinks to you all and hanging at the bar with you, so thank you for stopping by, whatever time of the night it was.
Where to next for Broadsheet and our collaborative projects you ask? You’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, pick up a copy of the autumn issue and sit down with a cocktail, or check in with us online as we continue to bring you the best of Melbourne.
