Fitzroy’s Fatto a Mano organic bakery is, for want of a better term, a northside institution. The perfect spot to quell any kind of hunger, all it takes is one walk past the window and you’ll stop dead in your tracks. An explosion of premises-baked loaves of bread, pizza, and sweets – all of it organic and much of it gluten-free – lures passersby. The lunchtime queue here is quite something to behold.

Try a vegetable pastie, chunky pie, Thai chicken sausage roll or slice of pizza topped with potato and olives or mushroom and pancetta. Baguettes are popular, as are a range of sugar fixes, from the rocky road and coffee scrolls to the Danish pastries. While seating is scarce, this is more a ‘get in and get out’ breakfast and lunch takeaway spot. Not quite a Seinfeld-esque ‘Soup Nazi’ deal, but close.

Fatto a Mano also supplies plenty of establishments around town with their wholesome gluten-free breads (pumpkin loaf, multi-seed), including neighbouring cafe Birdman Eating. Their breads have a soft and moist interior with a crunchy sesame seed crust, making them ideal for sandwiches, or even for picking at straight from the bag like a human hawk as you wander up Gertrude Street.
