Markov Place is proof that, more often than not, Carlton venues intent on offering a certain quality need to head off Lygon Street in order to secure discerning clientele. Thankfully, this smartly turned out bistro does just that and, along with its attached younger sibling Little Markov, the venue proves a valuable destination for dining and refreshment.

The sunken restaurant is a cosy affair and has good bustle when the room is full, and peaceful ambience when it’s not. The food is loosely extracted from French and Spanish cuisines and while the combinations aren’t too brave, the use of Victoria’s freshest seasonal produce make for enjoyable dining. Shrewdly picked international wines, along with excellent beers, spirits and cocktails, all speak of operators with an eye for detail.

Little Markov provides a nice casual bar environment for before or after dinner downstairs, and the glowing ambience allows a great backdrop for a date, a catch-up or a small soiree.
