Nestled in a basement on the corner of Collins Street and George parade, Il Solito Posto is well-known as an old favourite Melburnians are rather fond of. Having successfully created a cosy and rather private, below ground cellar-like environment, the restaurant offers a sophisticated wine list and classic Italian cuisine across bistro and fine dining, in two separate rooms.

Beyond the antique bike that sits perched against the basement entrance, is the dimly lit interior that manages to accommodate the crowds that flock for breakfast through to dinner. If you fancy bistro dining, try their ‘Antipasto della casa’ which features seasonal assaggini that is picked from both land and sea. If you are after something more substantial, an array of pasta dishes such as rich veal, tomato and rosemary penne ragu, or the Insalata di polo, that puts a regular chicken salad to shame.

For a fine dining experience take a few extra steps down to the lower basement that is lined with racks of fine wine. The hand crafted gnocchi with wagyu oxtail ragu promises delight in its name and on the plate. Unwind after the meal with their traditional Affogato, or if your stomach permits, do yourself a favour and go classic with the Tira mi su.
