The Millswyn's got a distinctly Scandinavian feel to it. Let’s blame it on a fascination with San Pellegrino’s world no.1 restaurant Noma and its Danish chef Rene Redzepi. Whatever the reason, the Nordic flavour is on the menu at restaurateur Davis Yu’s restaurant, situated on a leafy street in South Yarra.
Formerly restaurant institution, Lynch’s, the site has undergone a name change (reflecting its location on Millswyn Street) and has been designed by Melbourne interior design studio Hecker Guthrie (Sensory Lab, St. Ali, Outpost. To keep it fresh here’s the twist- the food is French Brasserie, in a Nordic inspired setting.
The aspiration here is for simple and unfussy food of the highest quality, with impressive dishes from British chef Nathan Johnson (ex Maze Grill). The menu is straight forward with roasts, seafood, charcuterie and pasta for dinner and some lighter additions of salads and sandwiches to the lunch menu.
Just across the road from the leafy Royal Botanic Gardens, detailed research went into creating the right European feel interior (Yu looked for inspiration from Copenhagen to Chicago) with plaited mops, white tiled walls and Italian porcelain lights.
It's a marriage of Scandinavian chic with old-world opulence to simple French bistro fare.
