Wide Open Road
274 Barkly Street
Brunswick

(03) 93876079

Hootan Heyderi and Jono Hill are breathing life into yet another residential Brunswick street with their latest project Wide Open Road, which follows A Minor Place.

With its original brickwork, mint-green walls, terrazzo tiles and curved ply ceiling, Wide Open Road’s aesthetic stays true to the era of its edifice. The café’s 1950s visage and minimalistic layout (by local designer-builders Provan Built) has a European sensibility, as patrons sit communally at large hardwood benches sipping from their coffee cups. Currently positioned in the front portion of the warehouse, the compact cafe will eventually grow to accommodate a commercial kitchen and further seating.

Roasting their own coffee out the back, Wide Open Road offers pour-over coffee using a filter type method as well as regular espresso style coffee using their own Bathysphere blend, which consists of Kenyan, Brazilian, Costa Rican and Ethiopian beans. Tea is treated just as seriously as the coffee, with Larsen & Thompson leaves and tea served according to tea timers so it can be consumed at its most perfectly steeped brew.

With the exception of the popular Henry’s white beans with dukkah and lemon, Wide Open Road offers a different menu altogether to that of A Minor Place. Serving a selection of deli-style food, including sandwiches, rolls and pastries, their specialities include mashed peas topped with pecorino, crispy pancetta and lemon and the NY deli bagel with pastrami, cheese, tomato, gherkins, lettuce and Dijon majo.
