It’s a bit nana-chic up at Pearl Oyster cafe in Thornbury, with a vintage fit-out (even the high-chairs are retro), welcoming staff and a kid-friendly vibe. Solo coffee drinkers (organic and fair trade), spread their broadsheets over sun-lit communal tables to a soundtrack of smooth, up-beat tunes and the bustle of hollering staff, while others commune quietly with their lattes in the leafy smoke-free courtyard.

It offers a simple menu that still manages to cover all its bases – the vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free are happily accommodated too, with breakfast options available all day. There are baguettes for lunch, with a few pan-Asian inspired dishes like the Tokyo Rainbow salad – avocado, pickled ginger, baby spinach and red cabbage in sesame vinegar dressing with Kupi mayonnaise. Recommended is the grilled mushroom with slow roasted garlic cloves, drizzled in olive oil and served with rocket and goats cheese on sour dough.
