The aroma from a freshly baked loaf of bread is truly something to savour. With everything handmade on the premises, Knead Bakers in Hawthorn has been enticing locals with the waft of fresh bread for years.

With more varieties than you can poke a stick at, Knead’s bread is made using a slow fermentation process and organic flours. This results in quite a rustic loaf, which has a soft texture and a chewy crust. Particularly of note are the baguettes, which fly out the door in the hands of eager patrons.

The space of the bakery itself is simple yet warm and inviting, with shelves stacked with all kinds of loaves and a front counter heaving with plates of freshly baked cakes, croissants (both plain and almond), slices, Danishes, biscuits and muffins.

The breakfast menu offers simple, homely meals, which focus mainly on bread and its accompaniments. There are plenty of toast options with the standard variety of condiments, or if you like your toast a little more filling, there’s sautéed mushrooms served on Knead’s sourdough.

If you are feeling like something sweeter for brekkie, there’s the heavenly French toast with spiced blueberries. For lunch, there are an assortment of pies and pasties served with light salads and a chunky tomato relish. There’s also freshly made sandwiches and quiches.
