Being new, Kau (pronounced “k-oh”) cafe is relishing in the joys that accompany such a privilege: making friends, experimenting with their menu and finding their feet in their High Street premises. Run by sisters Kauia and Naomi, Kau aims to be as environmentally friendly and conscious as it can, yet refrains from a decor that suggests such intentions. Instead salvaged tables, chairs and shelving offset modern lighting to forge a basic, but adequately vintage fit-out. A small, handwritten menu takes you through healthy breakfast and lunch options, where dhal filled wraps, roasted pumpkin, garlic mushrooms, baked eggs and homemade muesli join plentiful options. Food can be enjoyed at one of the limited tables or taken away in boxes.

Takeaway cups are 100 per cent compostable having been made with forest paper and lined with a bio film. It's a subtle choice, but something that makes this quiet local cafe appear endearing in its mindful respect for the environment.
