Stepping into Journal is a bit like visiting that imaginary library you’ve always planned to have in the dream house you’ll one day build. You know, the one where attractive wait staff fuel your literary endeavours with perfect, strong coffee and quality wine. Until you have the resources to realise your dream, there is Journal. Not exactly a private oasis, but friendly to readerly types, Journal trades in quality ingredients and quality design, which is why you might’ve spotted the cafe in a TV commercial or two.

The default go-to place in the Flinders Lane precinct, Journal’s menu is old-reliable; if you’ve been here once you know what to expect. Delicious lunch rolls, seasonal fruit with yoghurt and a fantastic tuna salad are just three pillars of the cafe’s contemporary cuisine. And there are always great baked goods if you feel like a sweet snack.

Seating options are plentiful, but get in early if you’re with friends. Large communal tables facilitate information sharing and nosy types might find themselves privy to the latest gossip from the CAE’s Intro to MYOB class, or the creative studios of the nearby Nicholas Building. And if you are creatively inclined, you’ll also want to check out Journal’s exhibition space, featuring rotating work by local artists of varied mediums.
