There’s a real sense of soul that circulates throughout the space at former Atomica head barista Matthew ‘The Bear’ Payne’s Jellystone Cafe. Payne’s vigorous front-of-house presence, and an overhanging Buddha statue, overlooks bags of Atomica coffee, while the counter – filled with all manner of goodness, from Belgian waffles, gingerbread people, pistachio and lemon cake, to colossal homemade sausage rolls – greets new arrivals.

Formerly The Green Tambourine, a dedicated ‘parents café’, Jellystone Cafe still honours the presence of youngsters with a dedicated play area down back. The punters come and go as they please, filtering past the front courtyard, childless or otherwise, to sit around communal tables and sip on hot Atomica dark roast coffee.

Munch-wise, the spicy BBQ roti ‘Babe’ pork sandwich is impossible to ignore, as is ‘The Spaniard’ with its chorizo in a smoky crushed tomato sauce on a hash brown topped with roquette, a poached egg and spicy chipotle sour cream. The rhubarb friande for dessert is a no-brainer. Vegetarian and gluten-free options, like most places these days, are a given.

Setting the scene further, an open fire looks out onto more tables in sectioned off spaces with comfy cushions and hanging bead curtains, offering sweet separation.
