Stepping into the quaint space of Gypsey & Musquito is reminiscent of a cosy country home, welcoming with its rustic timber countertops and shelving, complemented with mismatched furniture from a local flea market, freshly baked cakes, pastries and tempting savouries. A waitress ducks by with a tray of recycled jam jars used as glasses, filled to the brim with freshly squeezed berries and crushed mint. An upstairs seating area is hidden at the back, perhaps previously a bedroom or living room in its past incarnation and doused in natural light.

The breakfast menu, inspired by outback and rural produce, is presented as a single page with a lunch menu overleaf. Breakfast staples such as granola have been given a home-grown twist with wattleseed, macadamias, bush berries and oat clusters roasted in apple juice, or the roast field mushrooms served with smoked paper bark oil, saltbush chevre and sourdough toast. For those who are game, crocodile sausage is used in place of the traditional bacon, eggs and hash brown combination.

If you are looking for an entirely rustic experience, the cafe also offers six types of bush tea and organic fruit juice. Finish it off with a homemade lamington or a lemon meringue pie – for a little bit of Aussie heritage, in your mouth.
