On a corner up on Lygon Street in East Brunswick is an unassuming, and understated cafe, that is Gingerlee. Serving breakfast and lunch every day but one, it may be a relief to know about this cafe that explicitly caters to a hangover. Sit down in a comfy booth and Gingerlee will provide you with an excellent coffee and then point you gently towards its signature breakfast dish. There, in the middle of the menu is your saviour: eggs, bacon, chilli jam and a Bloody Mary.
But if this is not your state of affairs there’s still much to keep you satiated. Breakfast at Gingerlee has a decidedly exotic flavour. From Israeli eggs to Moroccan tagines, there’s a Middle Eastern feast to be had before midday. The Syrian-style French toast with orange blossom syrup, honey labne, stewed rhubarb and pistachio tastes as spectacular as it sounds, teetering like the Tower of Pisa as the staff deliver it to your table.
If you’re a late riser, take advantage of the brunch menu, which runs concurrently with breakfast after 11am. Once the clock ticks over to midday, a glance at the wine list is available, with a focus on Spain.
