Located on a quieter St. Kilda corner, away from the Fitzroy/Acland pandemonium, this little cafe is quaint, friendly and comfortable. There’s a communal atmosphere about the place that you immediately notice, whether you sit at the long bar that forms the centrepiece of the tiny interior or the leafy courtyard with wooden communal benches.

The coffee is Espresso Syndicate, which is organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance approved and roasted in Richmond with an emphasis on Ethiopian beans in the blend. The menu has a little something for everyone, with staples such as oats and muesli, as well as more adventurous offerings appearing on the specials board, such as black or glutinous rice.

Surrounded by small offices housing graphic designers and architects, the vibe at Dr. Jekyll is of a laid back creativity. It’s a place for locals, and with no outdoor signage it is easily missed, the key here is word of mouth. Now that you know the word, Dr. Jekyll is well worth a try.
