George Christopoulos’s Depot de Pain (‘bread depot’) is located in a prime corner in the centre of Carlton’s Rathdowne Village, adding to a family that started in St Kilda Road’s Blackman Hotel. Contained within a fresh, white façade, the foong + sormann designed space is sleek and modern, with light wooden panelling, notable artwork and an incredible chandelier.

Leading South Yarra bakery and parent company French Fantasies delivers twice daily to the café—or rather, to the one-stop shop for bread, patisserie delicacies or for the last minute (‘made it myself’) dinner. Breakfasts and cakes are on offer at the bread depot, alongside a selection of baguettes, tartines, croques, cheeses and sausages.

As Depot de Pain is fully licensed, you will find some bar stools by the window and a small staircase inside that most likely leads to a well-stocked cellar.
